There is no single standard that covers a container of basmati into Jeddah, aseptic mango pulp into Rotterdam and surgical instruments into Hamburg. Each has its own testing, labelling and documentation rules, and a buyer's own retail standards often go further than any of them.

Grades, tolerances and test parameters are recorded before production starts. Pre-shipment inspection is carried out against that record — by a third-party agency where the buyer or the market requires one.
Where a certificate of analysis, phytosanitary certificate or conformity document is needed, it is arranged as part of the shipment rather than chased after the goods have sailed.
